MILITARY IN THE MONGOL EMPIRE
The Mongols of ancient China had an extreme amount of discipline on the battle field. John Pian del Carpini explains how the Mongol army worked. . “The army was organized by 10 men under a squad leader, 10 squad leaders under one centurion, ten centurions under one battalion commander, ten battalion commanders under on colonel, whole army under 2 or 3 generals, one of them clearly in control. If a man flees from a squad the whole squad is executed. If the whole squad flees, then the 100 men in the centurion are executed. If members are captured and the others done free him, that squad is executed."[1] The Mongols could travel up to a 100 miles a day due to their ability to ride extremely light and their swift horses. Mongol soldiers could live without food for multiple days.
The Mongols had one of the most advanced military tactics of their time. The Mongols usually fought armies that had almost twice as many men as they did. The only way the Mongols had an actual chance of beating their enemy was through military strategy. The Mongols would light extra campfires and make hundreds of straw men just so the enemy would think that they had a lot more men than they actually had. Another tactic they had was to split their army in two and send on half to the back of the enemy, they coordinated these attacks with messengers traveling high speed between these two armies. While the front half attacked, the enemy would turn around to flee and would be slaughtered by the waiting Mongols. But the Mongols loved one tactic over all. They would pretend to lose against the enemy, and start to retreat. While the enemy ran after them in an unorganized chaos, the Mongols would turn around again and destroy the confident pursuers." The Mongols where one of the most powerful armies in the world for their time and many years after that.
